Carely User Manual

How to extract, set up and run the Carely desktop app on your own device — Windows, Linux, or Raspberry Pi.

1 What you downloaded

You downloaded Carely.zip. Carely installs itself the first time you run it — it builds its own private environment, installs what it needs, and adds a Carely icon to your Desktop. After that, you just use the Desktop icon.

There is nothing to configure: no API keys, no servers. It only needs an internet connection.

First, extract the zip

Run Carely from the extracted folder — don't run it from inside the zip.

2 Windows

  1. Open the extracted Carely folder.
  2. Right-click Start-Windows.bat → Run as administrator. It will also ask for administrator itself — click Yes. (This is only needed once, so Windows doesn't block the freshly downloaded files.)
  3. Let it finish — it shows "✓ All checks passed" and creates a Carely icon on your Desktop.
  4. From now on, just double-click the Carely icon on your Desktop.
If Windows shows "Windows protected your PC", click More info → Run anyway. After the first admin run it won't appear again.

3 Linux & Raspberry Pi

Don't double-click Start-Linux-macOS.sh — Linux opens .sh files in a text editor instead of running them. Use one of the two ways below.

Easiest — double-click the launcher

  1. In the extracted folder, double-click Carely.desktop.
  2. If asked, choose Execute (or Execute in Terminal).

Or — from a terminal

  1. Open the extracted folder, then open a terminal there.
  2. Run: bash Start-Linux-macOS.sh
  3. The first run asks for your password once (sudo) to install the audio and window libraries. This is normal.

When it finishes it creates a Carely icon on your Desktop — use that from then on.

If double-clicking the Desktop icon opens a text editor instead of running, open your file manager's Edit → Preferences → General and tick "Don't ask options on launch executable file" (set it to Execute). One-time setting.

Raspberry Pi — lighter on-screen companion (one-time)

The Raspberry Pi has a smaller graphics chip, so tell Carely to render its on-screen companion lighter. It's the same companion — only the rendering is lighter, so it stays smooth on the Pi.

  1. In the extracted Carely folder, open a terminal.
  2. Run this once: echo 1.0 > render_q.txt
  3. Then start Carely as usual (Carely.desktop, or bash Start-Linux-macOS.sh).
Raspberry Pi only. For even lighter, use a smaller number (e.g. 0.85); delete render_q.txt for full quality. Laptops and desktops don't need this step.

If the window won't open or there's no sound

Then run the setup again.

4 macOS

Open Terminal, drag the Carely folder into it to move there, then run bash Start-Linux-macOS.sh. If it complains about audio, run brew install portaudio and try again.

5 Requirements & updating

When a new version is available, Carely tells you inside the app with a download link. To update: download the new Carely.zip, delete the old folder, and run the setup once. Nothing to migrate — your account and data live in the cloud.

6 Caregiver web portal

The desktop app is for the patient. As a family member or caregiver you don't install anything — you use the Caregiver Web Portal in your browser, on any phone, tablet, or computer.

  1. Open the portal from the Get Started page — or open it directly and bookmark it.
  2. Sign in with the same account the patient's app uses.
  3. From there you can read AI conversation reports, manage medication reminders and contacts, update the patient's profile, and send a one-tap emergency alert.
The portal and the patient's app share one account — anything you change appears on the patient's device automatically.
